Start by doing your homework before you speak to your designer and give careful consideration to the following:

- how you would like to use the space eg for entertaining, studying, as a retreat.

- the style you are after eg contemporary, eclectic, Scandinavian, classic.

- your preferred colour scheme eg fresh, earthy, bold, muted

- the features you would like included in your fitout eg built in storage, feature lighting, window treatments

- the quality you are after

- your timeframe

- your budget

It also helps if you can compile and present your designer with images of the type of furnishings etc that you like.

Keep the conversation on likes/dislikes flowing throughout the design process to take the guesswork out of your project.  It also helps if you are able to make quick decisions to keep the project on schedule and maintain the momentum.

Ultimately, the end result is dependent on your designer having a clear and firm client brief to work to. This forms the foundation for the project.
